Explore some of Lonely Planet’s official best destinations with Back-Roads Touring

It’s easy to forget just how big a place the world is when we’re wrapped up in our own lives. There are so many new and exciting places to discover, and almost infinite experiences to be had – so it can be hard to know where to start when it comes to planning a holiday.

Each year, the well-respected travel gurus at Lonely Planet put together a list of their top ten destinations for the year – sending flutters of excitement through the travel community (and lengthening the destination wish lists of many of its readers). We are delighted to announce that the list for 2020 includes two Back-Roads Touring destinations: Morocco and England.

Tour Morocco with Back-Roads

Morocco

Coming in at number nine on the list is marvellous Morocco: a country where history comes to life, and centuries of tradition are part of the everyday. Enigmatic, vibrant and bursting with North African flavour, Morocco is not only the gateway to Africa, but it can feel like the gateway to another world. Exploring the winding lanes of the medina – unchanged for generations – in the sultry afternoon heat, it is easy to feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Venture into the vast lunar landscape of the desert or gaze up at the soaring peaks of the Atlas Mountains and it’s impossible to feel anything other than dwarfed (in the best possible way). It’s no surprise to us that Morocco has made it onto Lonely Planet’s 2020 list.

Our 10-day Majestic Morocco tour takes you from the atmospheric coastal city of Casablanca to the soul-stirring ‘Red City’ of Marrakech and its myriad sensory experiences. On this journey you'll explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Meknes, ascend the spectacular slopes of the Middle Atlas Mountains, admire the dramatic scenery of Dades Gorge and venture to the edge of the Sahara for an unforgettable night under the stars.

Discover Marrakech

England

Just pipped to the top spot, ever-changing England comes in at number two on the list. England is different things to different people: it can represent an idyllic country retreat, or vibrancy and exuberance in its exciting capital and other large cities. It is a country shaped by its history, proud of its heritage and filled with ancient legends – but one which also stands at the forefront of technology, fashion and architecture. Whether it’s breathtaking coastal views you’re drawn to, or you can’t wait to delve into the history of world-famous landmarks and castles, England offers something for everyone. Discover your favourite side of England on a small group tour with Back-Roads Touring.
