Excellent tour of the main First World War battlefields including some of the cemeteries, memorials and museums. The tour leader was extremely knowledgeable about the battles that were fought on the Western Front and illustrated his talks with very poignant personal stories of some of the soldiers involved. He also gave a practical explanation of the weapons and munitions that were used using relics dug up around Ypres. The coach was very comfortable and we stayed in nice hotels in towns that played a key role in the war.
Good tour leader, good group on the tour, heaps of information, good hotels and breakfasts.
A very comprehensive tour led by tour guide Stephen whose knowledge of the First World War and the battlefields brought the experience to life. The tour was flexible and Stephen was happy to include a visit to Polygon Wood where my grandfather saw action. Stephen arranged a wreath to be laid at the last post ceremony at the Menin Gate. A great tour, full days of sightseeing.
Excellent and extremely informative tour of the main First World War battlefields, stopping at museums, cemeteries and monuments along the route. The tour leader had an amazing amount of knowledge and experience, which really broadened my own knowledge and understanding of how the war was fought.
Best tour we have done. Our tour leader was passionate, very knowledgeable and able to tell the story without just reciting facts about what went on the Somme and Flanders WW1 battle fields. He was very giving of his research expertise to help us research relatives involved in various battles. We came away for a real appreciation of what happened and what life was like for the troops. Awesome !
This Tour was purchased through our Travel Agent through DH Tours in Ontario
Steve our Guide had an in depth knowledge of the Western Front, front lines of both Allies and German, dressing stations, R & R locations, memorials and cemeteries. The John Monash Centre was a stand out.
An excellent tour, with great accommodation. Thanks to the wonderful driver and tour guide, we covered so much of the fighting on the Western Front. The guide incorporated people’s request for cemetries and battle places that weren’t on the itinerary. It was very moving not only for them but also for the rest of the group as they shared family stories.
Was a great trip, our guide Steve made it such a worthwhile experience. His experience and enthusiasm made it just that much more enjoyable. I would recommend Back Roads to anybody wanting a good sized travel group with a nice paced tour.
Good leader lots of information, good bus driver.
Excellent tour, great value
Incredible Information.
Great Accommodation.
great people.
Tour guide was exceptional, loved his flexibility, knowledge, nice person, easy to talk too, made the trip. Steve Western.
Bus driver was great man, took good care of us, Alex.
Small group
small bus that was comfortable
Fantastic itinerary and guide.
A lot packed into a few days.
Remembrance Day in Ieper was truly memorable.
Good tour but accommodation needs to consider the age and capabilities of the tour members. I.E. should consider multi story accommodation should have lifts. One elderly couple were on the second floor and as there were no lifts the tour guide assisted them with their baggage both up and down.
All expectations met. Because I was the only Canadian amongst a group of Australians, the tour director went out of his way to ensure I had plenty of time to explore Canadian facets of the battlefields - especialy Vimy Ridge Memorial and Beaumont-Hamel.
The tour director made a few changes to the tour to allow more time for the Vimy Ridge Memorial than was originally planned and also returned me to Beaumont-Hamel while the rest of the tour group spent time at the Australian national memorial.. I was also given the honour to read aloud John McRae's poem In Flanders Fields at the Essex Farm field station. This I will never forget.
Great tour highly recommended
Well constructed, super fantastic and knowledgeable guide, a nice small group of people. Loved every moment.
Comprehensive tour with a very knowledgeable guide, Nic.
Nic the tour guide made sure everyone got out of the tour what they wanted !
Excellent tour guide Steve and skilled bus driver, comfortable bus. Small tour group. Tour was adaptable and covered the Western Front history very well.
Small group, excellent driver,, informative @ well researched leader. Time to add/adjust accordingly. Would be best if accomodation had lifts for baggage (older demographic).
Informative guide, sites visited appropriate, extra time to fit in Menin Gate & Amiens Cathedral (must do’s). Perhaps more group meals……our small group chose to eat together
Great value for money. Comprehensive.
very moving and hard to believe so many young people lost their lives.
Better than the itinerary. Small group travel works well.
Guide was brilliant, Mary,
Driver was excellent.
Issue were with head office, which needs to improve.
Don't know what this question means, the only thing I purchased was the tour
The WW1 Battlefields Tour was very well presented, we thoroughly enjoyed the backroads, the beautiful cemeteries and their history, meeting with gardeners looking after them, the towns supporting it, museums offering the history and stories behind this event. Our disappointment was the lack of access to some venues we expected to see as they were listed on the itinerary. Our accommodation and meals were of high standard, our hosts were very friendly and accommodating.
A once in a life time experience
The tour was great, the hotels were great. The tour was personal with a small tour party. The small coach was just right for navigating the country back roads.
Good value considering the locations, accomodation and food.
I got a great deal of information out of this trip which is not ewasy to find elsewherre
loved the history from both a personal and historical point of view
