Discover Europe's hidden treasures

Majestic medieval masterpieces. Awe-inspiring Roman ruins. Splendid Baroque palaces. Europe is absolutely brimming with outstanding heritage sites.

There’s no better way to immerse yourself in a destination than by delving deep into its past. As well as iconic landmarks, you’ll spot plenty of lesser-known gems across this culture-rich region on your next Back-Roads Touring adventure.

Admire extraordinary Roman ruins in Arles, France

Rome may be famed for its colossal Colosseum. But have you ever heard of the Arles Amphitheatre? The exquisitely preserved UNESCO structure is tucked away in the very heart of France’s pretty Provence region.

Dating to AD 90 when picturesque Arles was a jewel of the Roman Empire, it’s still used today for concerts, festivals and even the occasional bullfight. Spend an hour or so exploring this impressive relic. When seated in the amphitheatre's lofty stands, it’s easy to imagine a crowd of Roman warriors cheering on a thrilling chariot race!

Explore the gorgeous gardens of England’s Scotney Castle

Anne Boleyn’s childhood home, Hever Castle, isn’t the only fantastic fortress you’ll encounter on our Chelsea Flower Show tour. Situated just a stone’s throw from Royal Tunbridge Wells is the equally magnificent Scotney Castle.

The romantic medieval ruins (complete with turrets) sit on their very own moated island. The estate also features a Victorian mansion surrounded by picturesque, landscaped grounds which are a joy for all the senses. Wander through cool woodland glades and savour the aroma of fragrant flowers growing in the castle’s walled garden.

Step inside Puglia’s spectacular Sassi di Matera Caves

Soak up one of the best-kept Secrets of Puglia in Matera. We’ll take you on a guided walking tour of this historic Italian city's sublime subterranean structures.

The UNESCO World Heritage Sassi di Matera caves date back to the Palaeolithic Period and house a mesmerising mix of churches and dwellings. Marvel at the ancient frescoes adorning the ceilings of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera. Or why not indulge in tantalising local delicacies, from silky lagane pasta to freshly baked focaccia, at an atmospheric cave restaurant?

Stroll around Sintra’s whimsical Quinta da Regaleira

Sintra is just one of the many enchanting stops on our Discover Portugal tour. Perched atop a mountain in the Portuguese Riviera, it was once a prestigious royal retreat. On Day 2, we'll have the chance to explore the town and its collection of spellbinding castles during our free afternoon.

Many make a beeline for Sintra’s sunshine-hued Pena Palace. For something a little different though, seek out Quinta da Regaleira. The ornate estate is an architectural marvel built by an eccentric millionaire in the early 20th century. Its fairy-tale towers and picture-perfect follies sit within lush gardens that are awash with colourful blooms between April and October.
