Our BackRoads tour of the Baltic States was an enjoyable experience due primarily to the company of our fellow travelers. The quality of our accommodation was good and our tour guide and local guides did a satisfactory job during our tour. The sights and our experiences/venues we visited during our tour were most enjoyable. One issue has left a sour taste in our mouth. We had to leave the tour in Tallinn on the 2nd last day of the tour due to our not being able to get an entry Visa to Russia. We accept that this was no fault of BackRoads However, BackRoads were made aware of this many weeks if not months before the tour started. Accordingly BackRoads would not have incurred any costs for: accommodation for us in St Peterburg:, BackRoads provided meals, and entry costs to venues during these days.In our view BackRoads should have offered us some sought of rebate or at the least some credit towards a future BackRoads tour. As a consequence of this outcome we will not be travelling with BackRoads again nor will we be recommending BackRoads to any people who ask for a recommendation.

We thought our guide Ieva in the Baltics and Russia excellent. She was straightforward in her approach and her communication topnotch. The local guides too were very good. We have no real complaints about the trip itself with one major qualification. The days when breakfast lunch and dinner were "on" Backroads felt like going from meal to meal days. Total food. Almost all 12 in our tour felt the same. This detracted from the experience. It should be looked at again. The Spa hotel in the country outside Vilnius was delightful. Everyone enjoyed that overnight stay. HOWEVER, all agreed the dinner should have been a Backroads paid for meal and swapped with another night's Backroads dinner. The Spa Hotel night was not the night to be designated a free night. In the country there was no choice but to eat in that Hotel. The obtaining of the Russian visas was a debacle. Totally different information supplied by the UK office from the Australian HQ. The introduction letters supporting the visa application in NZ had one of our surnames spelt incorrectly and we received our passports back with the visas just over a working day before we departed NZ. That may take my wife a while to get over. But for that Backroads may have been heading for 5 stars.
