ANZAC on the Western Front: Dawn Service
Raymond Ad May 2025

The journey and the content were excellent. As a group we jelled together and built a supportive cohort of learners and explorers, everyone had something to offer. Our leader Steve Western was top notch and included everyone and bent over to assist. Our driver GG was on his first ANZAC trip and did an amazing job.

Our expectations were more than met. Our guide, Steve was extremely knowledgeable . He was patient, and his attention to detail was excellent.. He arranged for us to visit the grave of my husband’s uncle, which was a very moving experience. I think he’s the best guide we’ve ever had

The tour guide Steve was brilliant. He went over and beyond with every aspect of the tour. His knowledge of World War 1 was incredible. Nothing was ever a problem for him and was consistently flexible and approachable.
The accommodation was moderate. Not particularly suitable to the age demographic, some had lots of stairs, some had slippery baths to stand in for the shower, the last accommodation in Amien was very disappointing.
There were a lot of cemeteries. The importance of these is huge, however I was not expecting us to visit so many, and after some time they all rolled into one. It did bring home though, just how many died on the front, but this was also obtained from the many names in the many memorials also visited.
Steve made the trip. I will remember it forever. I’m so grateful for his generosity, hospitality, knowledge and the laying of the wreath at Menin Gate. What an honour.

Absolutely brilliant tour full of information and site visits making this period of history much clearer to me. Would recommend this tour to everyone.

Every spot had a point. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and was happy to answer questions and research family history. The countryside was lovely and the highlights just too numerous to mention

The 6 day Backroad Tour of the World War One Battlefields is a trip that will always have great memories for me. Every member of our group got on so well together. Steve our Tour Guide I Commented to him that he was the best guide as the information we were given was informative and not too in-depth as we were all civilians, not army personnel. Chris our driver was always there to help us. Our bus was always clean and comfortable.
From Day 1, we went to Messiness Ridge Cemetery where my son Todd and I were able to visit my grandfather’s grave. A special place. One of our fellow travelers, Mary had a great uncle buried in the same cemetery. The night we all went to the Menim Gate. That night four of our group laid a wreath in memory of our fallen soldiers. I had been to the area before and was pleased to visit sites that I’d not visited before.
I will always tell and recommend this tour to others.

This has been a most rewarding experience, thanks to Seve guiding us through with his comprehensive knowledge of the 1914-18 war. There was the sadness of the enormous loss of life, but it was so interesting to learn of the battles and the strategies used by both sides of the conflict. It was great to see how the CWGC continues look after fallen, the cemeteries are kept in an immaculate condition. The work of the memorials and museums to make the experience so interactive was outstanding. Truely an experience never to forget. Thank you Steve.

Steve was an excellent guide, he knew the geographical area and local history well and was never stumped when answering questions from the group , his knowledge of WWI battles and places was extensive. Steve was personable, catering for the needs of everyone in the group, he found the exact location of my great grand uncles grave in the British war Cemetery at Aubigny for, which I am most grateful.

Your guide Steve and driver Ken were excellent, it was 6-day tour that Steve was able the fill with the facts and stories of the life and death on the Western Front. As I was an ex-soldier with a fair knowledge of the Australian in WW1. Steve was able to clarify several points for myself and the group. Both Steve and Ken were able to shepherd us one site to the next filling in various details about the area and actions on the Western Front.
Both Steve and Ken were able to recommend restaurants to eat at and other site of interest in the towns we stayed, to help round out our tour.
The only real complaint was the accommodation at the last hotel. It was not suitable for people in the seventies and eighties as there was no lifts, the stairs were narrow and steep.

We felt well looked after by both our guide and driver. The tour was taken at a steady pace. Lots of detail given st each stop. Well worth the time to do.

Very informed and emotional Tour, highlights were laying a wreath at the Menin Gate and being present at a re-burial of an unknown British Soldier.
Gave an excellent understanding of the lay of the land and conditions in both main battlefields of Flanders and the Somme, where my grandfather served as an 18 year old from New Zealand in 1918.

We found the whole tour both informative and moving. Our guide Steve was amazing at the level of knowledge he possessed. If he didn’t know an answer he would research it. The coach was comfortable and made getting around easy. The first 2 accomodation places were nice and well situated. Unfortunately the last hotel whilst clean and well presented lacked the basic amenities like air conditioning and had a very small bathroom. This was apparently due to the normal hotel being booked out. Otherwise we would recommend this tour to anyone who has a deep interest in WW1.

He talked more about the English than the Anzac
