Unfortunately, ill health prevented me from enjoying several days of the tour. I would probably have rated it a 5 otherwise..
Interesting selection of locations to visit and plenty of time to enjoy them.
Our guide Carolyn was excellent - not only for her knowledge but also for her help in finding medical care when needed and extremely supportive of a tour member with mobility issues. Nothing was too much for her.
Our driver Angela was also excellent, negotiating unknown roads and lanes with aplomb.

Unfortunately personal circumstances prevented our enjoying this tour to its fullest but, that aside, the tour was well curated, allowed for some flexibility in regards to some specific experiences and was magnificently led (Carolyn Anderson) and roads safely negotiated (Angela)

Carolyn was an excellent and informative guide. She was extremely helpful and efficiently followed up on any queries we had.
The places we visited were, what can I say, terrific.
I absolutely loved the Channel Islands. French highlights were Dinan and Mont St Michel. I have many great memories.
Unfortunately there quite a few unwell people which resulted in me contracting pneumonia in Paris.. People were coughing (with one couching over me).
Poor Angela and Carolyn had to ferry people to get medical attention at St Malo. I definitely felt those who were affected should have been aware of infection control and wore masks.
Luckily I’m now pretty much restored to better health and have put this distressing situation behind me.

Not up to the standards of guided tours I have been taking for the last 17 years!

The Backroads experience was new to us, but we did enjoy it, especially the extra stuff you would not see on the highways. We were disappointed that changes were made to the schedule before departure, especially the loss of a day in Guernsey. The host and Driver were amazing.

This trip gives you a taste of England, Channel Islands and Western France.
Great itinerary, enhanced by Tony as leader and Mark, our driver.

My travel agent found the tour the dates fitted in with the rest of my itenary. So it was a happy outcome to find the tour so good

Places visited were very interesting, historically and culturally. Tour guide and driver were excellent. The one disappointment was the ending hotel in Paris. Wi-fi out for some days. Poor lighting in room didn't make for easy reading at night. Poor breakfast. Insisted on payment of city tax in cash

Fantastic tour with visits to some very interesting places. Small group of 9 with a fabulous TD and driver. Enjoyed all the hotels we used as while. Highly recommended

Choice of visits very good. Enjoyed Channel Islands. Tour guide and driver good. Fine tunings lacking. For example, on the first night at the White Orchid Hotel welcome dinner, I asked for a sparkling water in addition to the only glass of wine on offer and was told I had to pay for it. I think that a reception drink as well with the opportunity for travellers to introduce each other has always been on other tours. Instead, we were just told that dinner was ready after the tour guide had introduced himself. Brief introductions are more cohesive for people who have not met before. The lady driver, although a very good driver, was a smoker and clearly had a respiratory problem. It was awful seeing her struggle with the bags and passengers offered to help.

Really enjoyed the tour. Well organised and everyone responded by always being friendly, respectful to other travellers and being punctual.
Hotels were well placed and a good standard. Meals provided were of a high standard.
Places visited were well chosen to give a balanced overview of current and historical, prompting further research on our return home.
Coach was a right for narrow island roads and ferry crossings. Driver very capable always. Thank you Toni.

The basic tour was good. It was improved to a great standard by the tour director Tony Knight who added some extra information on each of the visits to locations to a very high standard. Also the driver Nathan Brown was like part of the team and made the whole trip so enjoyable.

Our guide Tony was committed to making this trip great for all his passengers and Jordon our driver also committed.The Channel Islands full of history and Back Roads seem to capture all of that in their itinerary.Most interesting especially as The Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans in the 2nd World War.
Both Guernsey and Jersey Islands both different.Not forgetting Isle of Sark,
Which is beautiful and home to many craftspeople.

We had a wonderful experience with our first time with Backroads. London to Paris via the Channel Islands was great in that our guide Carolyn had a good knowledge of the history of the areas we were in. She went out of her way for us and was very helpful. We felt very safe with our bus driver Toni who had a great sense of humour.

Everything was top quality. Carolyn the Tour Guide was well prepared, organised, pleasant, full of knowledge and proactive in seeking additional information when requested. She had very good interpersonal skills and provided additional support, above and beyond, to two tour group members who became ill on the tour.
The intinerary was varied but still allowed adequate free time to do your own thing and covered the history of the various places on the itinerary very well, which was what we came for.
Accommodation and meals provided were exceptional and the driver, Lee, was a valuable member of the Tour- safe, great navigation and very helpful and obliging with luggage at overnight stops.
Would thoroughly recommend this tour for something out of the ordinary and exploring some beautiful places with remarkable history.

I love this tour, it was my first with back roads. I would recomend it to anyone interested in seeing the channel Islands. Hight lights for me was the people I traveled with, a wonderful group of Aussies. Carolyn and Lee worked well together it was like one big happy family. The day on Sark, the maps Carolyn provided. Exploring the Islands.

Thoroughly recommend this tour. The Channel Islands history and countryside was fascinating as were the areas around Saint Marlo and Maintenon. Good balance of sites and towns visited. The ferry trip to Guernsey was long but our group took it as a one of the varied modes of transport experienced on the trip and found it relaxing. All of the hotels were of a high standard.
Our tour leader Carolyn and Lee our driver were excellent. The little touches and support that make Back Roads a great tour company were appreciated by all of our small group.

Even though the weather disappointed me (I used the pooling Maintenon once) the tour was great. Tony was an outstanding tour guide who really made a difference daily with his attention to detail and sense of humour. He made the long drive to Paris go quickly with his Guess the Song game. Gordon the driver joined in when he could and drove safely and smoothly. The tour group were well traveled and great company and the destination varied and interesting historically. Highlights for me were Sark, the Jersey Tunnels and St Malo. Returning to Dinan reminded me of it's unique beauty and I would love to book another Backroads tour. Kia Ora Alexandria Purvis.

A great introduction to the Channel Islands with our excellent tour guide, Tony.

Tour guide Tony and driver Gordon were excellent. Would highly rate them both. Nothing seemed too much trouble. Tony was most informative in his knowledge of the local area. His people management skills were perfect and caring, which contributed to harmonising the group together.

Tony the tour leader is very knowledgeable, a likeable man and helpful. His knowledge of the areas we attended is extensive and delivered in a friendly and professional manner.
Gordon our bus driver has a wonderful feel for driving conditions and he always made the drive feel safe.

Have said 3 star only because there was alot of walking. Ok for :70 - 80 tourists but really hard going for older persons like 86! .
The tour was very interesting lovely accomodation. lots of very informative narrative Very helpful and considerate Tour guide Tony. I’d like to give 4 star if I was a bit younger still I’m so glad I was on they Tour saw and learnt alot

My second time touring with Backroads and this one didn’t disappoint, great guide and driver, Tony & Steve, interesting trip and surprising Chanel Islands. Will plan another trip next year.

Excellent tour, the Chanel Islands are beautiful with a lot of history. Both our guide and bus driver were very good. Our guide had a great knowledge and experience of this tour so as to maximise our experience.

Fabulous guide and driver. Thankfully we had 3 empty seats otherwise the bus would have been a bit claustrophobic. Great hotels and itinerary.

I liked the size of the group and the amount of time to explore on our own after getting an introductory tour and outline from our excellent guide.

The Channel Islands are delightful. And the places we visited in France should be on everyone’s bucket lists, they are so special.
The tour bus was very comfortable and could enter roads and areas the big coaches can’t.
The tour guide Tony Knight is the best we’ve ever had on any trip. He was fully prepared every day and his knowledge on every site was outstanding. He went above and beyond to personalise the tour for every person where he could. Our driver Lee was also excellent and we felt very safe with him behind the wheel.

So much was included in the trip eg Winchester, Corfe Castle, St Malo, Mount Saint Michel, Dinan, surprise visit to Chateau de La Motte-Husson, Chateau Maintenon and Chartres Cathedral etc Visiting Guernsey, Sark and Jersey. Highlights: the little chapel, La Hogue Bie, the war tunnels, the Guernsey tapestries,, Fougeres castle, st Matthew Lalique church, Elizabeth castle, Mont Orgueil. Absolutely fantastic

The Tour concept is very appealing but although in many areas was enjoyable, educational and enhanced by wonderful weather, fell well short of expectations. More details to follow

The tour was excellent, well organised, interesting content, great group of travellers. It was a shame that there was a timing problem with the ferry from Poole to Guernsey, not Back Roads fault, but it did create a bit of stress for the group. We loved what we did and saw, and felt that the Tour Leader and Driver did some extra things for us that were fantastic.

Excellent itinerary full of interesting and beautiful places to see and explore. Allowed for enough free time along with introduction tours where needed. A few hiccups with ferry crossing boats and times not being really convenient or accurate but I believe this was beyond the Tour Guides control though he did unfortunately cop some flack for it from some tour members.
Just for reference, Condor operates the ferries between the islands and if the fast ferry out of Pool is unavailable then the alternative out of Portsmouth is more a working ferry not a cruise ship so facilities can be a little more basic and the crossing does take 7 hours. Bearing that in mind, it was still very comfortable and part of the adventure!
Apart from that the chosen hotels were all wonderful, all breakfasts were provided along with some dinners.
Would definitely recommend Back Roads Touring to anyone.

I really enjoyed this tour although there was a lot of free time which may have been because the islands are small. Excellent Guide and driver

Small group travel had great benefits in places seen, roads travelled, experiences, plenty of own time to personal things and generally good accomodation.

This tour gives just a little bit of England, and a good time in the Channel Islands, but you get to France and all of a sudden it is finished! St Malo was an absolute Highlight, as was Mont St Michel and Dinan, we would have liked just one more day in the French countryside!
