Small group touring at its best. Our guide and driver were exceptional - They had a terrific sense of humour ,and were always professional and helpful, going above and beyond to make the trip enjoyably memorable.

Our tour guide had a very thorough understanding of local history and legends and was very personable/good fun. BUT...We were left to our own devices to get to know one another - no effort to introduce ourselves to the group. Portuguese is not a widely spoken language: little effort was made to provide us with useful vocabulary for conducting transactions with locals. Yes - perhaps that is my job as a tourist (to be prepared) but it would have been useful to have been provided with a crib sheet of useful phrases. We had a quiet day (apparently our driver needed a day off) in a remote location at Quinta da Pacheca. We were advised not to walk in to town but to take a taxi but the town was just a small town (nothing of special interest). When we paid big money to get to Portugal, I didn't get value for money that day. Often when we got to a new town we were told in which direction to go to find sights ... but got the impression our guide wasn't interested in taking us to them.

It gave an excellent overview of Portugal and I particularly enjoyed seeing the smaller towns and out of the way places which would have been hard to get to on my own.
